St. George was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers, and Ancestor Square is named after Brigham Young, who led the Mormon pioneer settlers to the area. The square was originally part of Main Street but was renamed in honor of Brigham Young in 1858.
There are many historic buildings surrounding the square, including the Old Courthouse, which was built in 1876 and now houses the St. George Chamber of Commerce; the Tabernacle, which was built in 1867 and now serves as an event venue; and the Opera House, which was built in 1913 and now serves as a museum.
